Abstract

1,040,276. Locks. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. June 8, 1964 [July 30, 1963], No. 30098/63. Heading E2A. A pin tumbler lock comprises a body 10 with a bore 11 and a cylinder 12 mounted in the bore for angular movement therein, the body and cylinder having bores 15 which are aligned when the key is withdrawn and which hold spring loaded pins 17 for preventing angular movement of the cylinder until an appropriate key is inserted and is characterized by the provision of hardened steel members 19 located in further bores in the body and/or the cylinder near the exposed end in positions to protect some or all of the pins from the action of a drill applied to the exposed end of the lock. When the key is inserted in slot 14 the pins 18 are moved to positions flush with the outer face of the cylinder thereby pushing pins 17 wholly within the body 10 so as to allow the cylinder to be moved angularly by the key. The hardened steel members may be in the form of cylindrical plugs 19 mounted in additional bores parallel to the bores 15. An annular hardened steel ring 21 may also be interposed between a flange 13 on the cylinder and a shoulder in the bore 11. The plugs 19 may be replaced by a plurality of hardened steel balls 22, Fig. 4 (not shown), located in a diametrical bore in the cylinder. The pins may also be made of hardened steel or may be accommodated in hardened steel lines 23 in their respective bores.
