Abstract
An electrical conductor has an insulating layer of a perfluoro-carbon polymer and a layer of a heterocyclic polymeric imide bonded to and surrounding the perfluorocarbon layer, the perfluorocarbon layer having been cleaned prior to the bonding of the polymeric imide to it. The perfluorocarbon layer may also be chemically etched prior to bonding the polimide. The layers may be applied from solution by pasing through a suitable bath: a plurality of passes may be made. The solution may be heated, and the coatings are finally cured in an oven. The perfluorocarbon polymer may be PTFE, polyhexafluoropropylene or copolymers of tetrafluorethylene and hexafluoropropylene; the polyimide may be a poly pyromellitimide, a polyimide formed from naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid, or a polybenzimidazole; many specific examples of each types are given. In Examples, a conductor consisting of 19 strands of silver-plated copper wire, each coated with PTFE, is coated with a polyimide; 7 of the so-called conductors are then formed into a cable, shielded with silver-plated copper wire, further coated with PTFE and finally further coated with a polyimide. In another construction, a conductor is coated with PTFE, polyimide, and more PTFE then heated to bond and cure the layers.
