1340136 Cables HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 19 April 1971 [9 Feb 1971] 25738/71 Heading H1A A conductor is wrapped with one or more layers of an electrically insulating film or fabric tape having a sealant adhesive coating of an addition cure polyimide polymer of the structure shown (before curing), to provide a heat resistant insulation. A method of making such an insulated conductor comprises preparing a lacquer solution of polyimide polymers, for example by dissolving a polymer of the structure shown in p-dioxane and dimethyl formamide, coating a heat resistant insulating polyimide film tape with the lacquer and drying the coating, "B" stage polymerizing the polyimide polymers by heating in an oven, wrapping the composite tape about a conductor, for example multifilament silver plated copper wire, and finally heat curing the coating to a substantially void free sealant state. A further coating of tetrafluoroethylene polymers and/or tetrafluoroethylenehexafluoropropylene copolymer may be subsequently added if required.
