Abstract

1495028 Insulated conductor BAYER AG 26 March 1975 [28 March 1974] 12643/75 Heading H1A [Also in Division B2] A copper conductor, e.g. of flat cross-section is insulated by being wrapped spirally (e.g. with an overlap of 50%) with a laminate consisting of a high temperature resistant foil which has been stretched monoaxially to render it heat shrinkable and a layer which is capable of being heat sealed, the wrapped conductor then being heated to the softening temperature of the heat sealable layer. An excellent bond between the laminate and conductor is formed without the application of external pressure. The foil may be of polyhydantoin or a polyimide foil monoaxially stretched by a ratio of between 1 : 1À2 and 1À3. The heat sealable layer may be a polyurethane adhesive on a polyfluorohydrocarbon, e.g. a fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymer of 80 to 20% by weight of ethylene and 20 to 80% by weight of propylene or polyvinylidene fluoride. The wrapped conductor is heated in a drying chamber or drying shaft. The process is particularly applicable to the conductors used in transformers and electric motors. Examples are described.
