Abstract

1,039,882. Workmen's staging; handrails. SWAN, HUNTER & WIGHAM RICHARDSON Ltd. Nov. 29, 1963 [Aug. 29, 1962], No. 33189/62. Headings E1B and E1S. A collapsible frame for workmen's staging 11 comprises a column 1 from the lower end of which extends radially arms 3, 4 respectively having struts 6, 7. The staging is adapted for use in ships, to be lowered with the arms folded against the column through a hatch into the hold and after erection the top of the column is hauled by means of an eye 15 through holes 16 in the deck and secured by a key 19 in one of several holes in the column. The staging is held rigidly by a split collar 18 clamped to the column and clamping the key 19 and bolted to the coaming of the hole 16 or the column may closely fit a spool mounting fitted over the hole. The planks 11 rest on transverse planks and the shorter transverse arms 4 which are accordingly placed at a higher level than the arms 3. The transverse planks may be replaced by tubes 12 clamped to the arms 3 or all the arms may be at the same level including tubes connecting the ends of the arms 3. The inner ends of the strut 6 may be secured by a removable bolt or as shown for the strut 7, Fig. 8, may carry a projection 33 adapted to be secured inside a rim 31 on the column 1 by a pivoted cam 36. Hinged stanchions 14, Fig. 1, are provided for hand-rails and may have a base 43, Fig. 9, of square crosssection slidable in a socket 39 and on a pin 41 so as to fold about this pin. The arms may be connected to the column by mushroom heads in keyhole slots, T heads engaging hooks or channelled members engaging slots.
