Abstract

A mineral lubricating oil contains a colloidal dispersion of an alkali or alkaline earth metal carbonate produced by preparing a solution of an acidic sulphur-containing hydrocarbon and a phenolic compound in an inert solvent as diluent oil, adding an alkali or alkaline earth metal base to the oil mixture in proportions initially less than that required to form the metal salts of the total acidic and phenolic compounds therein, contacting the total mixture at elevated temperature with CO2, whereby a colloidal metal carbonate is formed in the mixture, the carbonation being carried out in the presence of H2O, and, after the carbonation has been completed, carrying out a sulphurization reaction on the mixture.ALSO:A colloidal dispersion of an alkali or alkaline earth metal carbonate is produced by preparing a solution of an acidic sulphur-containing hydrocarbon and a phenolic compound in an inert solvent as diluent oil, adding an alkali or alkaline earth metal base to the oil mixture in proportions initially less than that required to form the metal salts of the total acidic and phenolic compounds therein, contacting the total mixture at elevated temperature with CO2 whereby a colloidal metal carbonate is formed in the oil mixture, the carbonation being carried out in the presence of H2O, and, after the carbonation has been completed, carrying out a sulphurization reaction on the mixture. The dispersions which are sulphurized, by conventional means, e.g. addition of elemental S at an elevated temperature, are substantially the same as those described in Specification 921,124. The sulphurization may be carried out immediately after completion of carbonation or after stripping the mixture with, e.g. inert gas, such as N2, or air, under vacuum or sub-atmospheric pressure. The dispersions are incorporated in lubricating oils.
