Abstract

The process for preparing oil-soluble additives for petroleum oils according to the parent Specification, which comprises dissolving an acidic sulphur-containing hydrocarbon and a phenolic compound in an inert solvent as diluent oil, adding an alkali or alkaline-earth metal base to the oil mixture in proportions less than that required to form salts with the total acidic and phenolic compounds therein, and contacting the oil mixture at elevated temperatures with carbon dioxide, whereby colloidal metal carbonate is formed in the oil mixture, the carbonation reaction being carried out in the presence of water, is modified by carrying out the process in two stages, the first stage effecting the formation of a minor proportion of the metal phenate and the second stage effecting the formation of the remainder of the metal phenate in the diluent oil, the major proportion of the acidic sulphur-containing hydrocarbon being added with the carbon dioxide and the final product being air-blown to stabilize the product against evolution of hydrogen sulphide. 20 to 40% by weight of the total metal base and not more than 15% by weight of the total acidic sulphur-containing hydrocarbon may be incorporated in the diluent oil in the first stage. The second stage reaction may be carried out at 110-150 DEG C. The metal base can be the oxide, hydroxide, or hydroxide hydrate metal of an alkali- or alkaline-earth metal, preferably calcium or barium. In a typical example, nonyl phenol was dissolved in mineral oil and the mixture was heated to 135 DEG C., barium hydroxide octahydrate being added over 30 minutes. Phosphosulphurized polybutene was added together with barium hydroxide octahydrate to the above oil mixture over one hour at 135 DEG C., carbon dioxide being allowed to bubble through the reaction mixture during that time. Air was blown through the oil composition before filtration.ALSO:A modification of a process for preparing oil-soluble additives for petroleum oils which comprises dissolving an acidic sulphur-containing hydrocarbon and a phenolic compound in a diluent oil, adding an alkali- or alkaline earth-metal base to the oil mixture, and contacting the oil mixture at elevated temperatures with carbon dioxide, whereby colloidal metal carbonate is formed in the oil mixture, the carbonation being carried out in the presence of water, the modification being in effecting the process in two stages, the formation of a minor proportion of the metal phenate being effected in the first stage and the formation of the remainder being effected in the second stage in which carbonation and the addition of the major proportion of the acidic-sulphur containing hydrocarbon is effected, the final mixture being air-blown. 20 to 40% by weight of the total metal base and not more than 15% by weight of the total acidic sulphur-containing hydrocarbon may be used in the first stage. The temperature at which carbonation is effected may be from 110-150 DEG C. Lubricating and fuel oils may be used as the diluent oil. Preferred acidic sulphur-containing hydrocarbons are phosphosulphurized UOP polymer bottoms and polyolefines having a molecular weight of from 100 to 50,000. Phenols used may be alkyl phenols, poly-hydroxy alkyl phenols, bisphenols, alkyl-amino phenols or alkyl phenol sulphides. The metal base can be the oxide, hydroxide, or hydroxide hydrate of an alkali- or alkaline-earth metal, preferably calcium or barium.
