A magnetic holding or lifting device comprises permanent magnets, e.g. of Alnico or ceramic material embedded in a body 50 of plastics material enclosed by a non-magnetic, e.g. aluminium housing 20, 24, 26 in which is pivotally mounted a lever 54 having at its opposite ends a handle whereby the device can be moved to a position for manipulating a sheet 62 or other object and a cam 66 which slidably engages the attracted object to release the latter from the device. The lever pivots in a slot in the centre of the housing, and there are four sets of magnets each set comprising a plurality of wafer-like blocks with either like or unlike poles adjacent and interspersed with soft iron or steel polepieces whose edges 48 project below the housing.
