Abstract

1,039,661. Making connecting rods or pistons; welding by pressure. DANFOSS A.S. Jan. 30, 1964 [Jan. 30, 1963], No. 4058/64. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F2] A connecting rod with a spherical head, e.g. for compressors of refrigerators, is made by depositing a steel ball in a closely fitting electrode and joining a shaft to the ball by electrical welding under pressure. The ball may fit into a socket in a piston or after a flat has been ground on its end the ball may fit directly into a cylinder and function as a piston. A hardened steel ball 1, Fig. 2 (not shown), e.g. a commercial ball bearing is located in a fitting recess 2 in a one or two piece electrode 3. The shaft 4 of a softer metal than the ball 1 and having a flat end is connected to an electrode 5 and resistance welded to the ball 1 which remains substantially undeformed. Subsequently the weld is post-heated by a short intense current passed between the electrodes 3, 5. A ring 10 or a block which is subsequently bored is resistance welded to the other end of the shaft 4 using electrodes 5, 11. The shaft 5 may be solid or tubular or provided with a recess 8.
