Abstract
1383879 Welding by fusion KLÍCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AG 30 Oct 1973 [4 Nov 1972] 50438/73 Heading B3R In making an I.C. engine cylinder and cylinder head assembly, a cylinder 2 and a head 1 are preformed and butt-welded together by electron beam, and, to avoid subsequent necessity of removing inwardly projecting weld metal, the cylinder and head are internally chamfered so that when they are abutted there is formed a groove 7 large enough to receive the entire portion 8 of the welding seam. To prevent entry of metal spray into the cylinder during welding, a bi-convex ring 9 is fitted within the groove 7 and becomes part of the weld. Since, as shown, the top of the piston travels past the weld seam, the latter is arranged to lie at an acute angle to the cylinder generatrix, e.g. the seam is zig-zag, as shown, or wavy. Individual cylinders may be welded to individual heads, or blocks of cylinders to blocks of heads.
