Abstract

Yarn is spun throughout the wind with a cyclically varying length of traverse stroke in such a way that the amount of yarn laid in each cycle or on a low whole number of cycles corresponds to the length of yarn necessary to make a textile article of required dimensions. It is explained that when yarn is withdrawn from a package built by traverse strokes cyclically varying in length, the take-off tension, on which depends the dimension of a panel of fabric knitted from the yarn, also varies according to the cycle. The invention aims therefore to obviate any variation in dimension as between one panel and another derived from a single package built with a cyclically varying traverse-stroke and permits the use as knitting supply packages of nylon continuous filament yarn built with a cyclically-varying traverse stroke, in particular "composite build packages" which when produced with a hydraulic builder unit are of true cone shape at each end and have certain stated advantages. A preferred package is wound in cycles each comprising between 2 and 5 traverse-strokes.
