Abstract

1,038,712. Hose couplings. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. June 14, 1963 [July 3, 1962], No. 25403/62. Heading F2G. An assembly of a coupling with a flexible hose 10 having a reinforcement 11 embedded between an outer cover 12 and an inner lining 13 comprises a nipple 17 with a cylindrical tapered portion 18 which fits into a cylindrical slit 14 intermediate the inner and outer peripheries of the lining tube 13, a separate insert 15 fitting within the bore of the tube 13 and having an outwardly flanged end 16 abutting the end of the nipple 17 adjacent the inner periphery of the tapered portion 18 and an outer sleeve 21 swaged inwards to compress the hose between it and the insert 15 and the bored reinforcement 11 between it and the nipple. The hose 10 is of flexible rubber and the reinforcement 11 is wire braid. The slit 14 is cut concentrically with the axis of the hose and of slightly greater diameter than the external diameter of the flange 16 so that the portion 18 can enter the slit without fouling the flange. The bores of the insert and of the nipple are substantially the same as that of the hose. Annular grooves 23 in the insert 15 assist in forming a low pressure seal when the sleeve 21 is deformed and a frusto-conical sealing surface 20 on the nipple serves to force the portion 18 further into the slit 14, as seen (after compression) in Fig. 2.
