Abstract

1488669 Hose couplings DUNLOP Ltd 6 Jan 1975 [16 Jan 1974] 02083/74 Heading F2G A coupling for a flexible hose line assembly comprises a nipple 6, an outer sleeve 10 and an inner sealing insert 7, the nipple 6 having a threaded end 18 which screws into an axially extending threaded bore 19 provided in the sleeve 10. The insert 7 is located within a plastics tube portion 2 of a hose line 1 at one end and within an axially extending throughway in the nipple 6 at the other end. The end of the nipple 6, which is located within the sleeve 10, has a tubular locating end portion 20 which is positioned between the outer surface of the plastics tube 2 and the inner surface of a wire braid outer reinforcement 3, the inner surface of the end portion 20 being provided with at least one annular rib 21 of generally sawtooth form. After assembly, the sleeve 10 is deformed by means of a swaging tool 30 so that the reinforcement 3 is gripped between the threaded bore 19 and the plastics tube 2, the latter being forced into sealed contact with the insert 7 whilst the annular ribs 21 are forced into the outer surface of the plastics tube 2 to create annular lip seals. The outer surface of the end portion 20 of the nipple 6 may also be provided with sawtooth annular ribs whilst the outer face of the insert 7 may be provided with annular recesses. The nipple 6 may be secured to a coupling socket 5, e.g. by means of a thrust wire 13 located within annular recesses 14, 15. The plastics tube 2 may be of P.T.F.E., and the swaging tool 30 may comprise several preshaped die members which are displaced radially inwardly to effect deformation of the sleeve 10.
