Abstract

A jet propulsion unit comprises a rockettype combustion chamber to which oxygen and a hydrocarbon fuel are supplied, combustion gases from the chamber discharging on to a turbine which carries at its periphery axial-flow compressor blades which discharge air under pressure into a second combustion chamber to which hydrocarbon fuel is supplied and into which the turbine exhaust gases discharge. In the embodiment shown, the rocket-type combustion chamber 1 comprises a catalyst bed 5 to which hydrogen peroxide is supplied through line 4, the hydrogen peroxide being dissociated thereby into steam and oxygen at high temperature. Fuel such as kerosene is supplied into the chamber I and burns with the oxygen, the resulting products discharging through the nozzle 8 and impinging on the blades of the turbine rotor 2 which is driven thereby. The turbine rotor carries a row of compressor blades 2a which effect compression of air entering through inlet 18 of the air breathing engine 3. The engine 3 comprises a flame tube 17 and fuel such as kerosene is supplied thereto through injectors 11, 12, 13. The combustion gases discharging through the open downstream end. The kerosene fuel is supplied through line 7 and is preheated in the jacket 8a surrounding the nozzle 8 before passing to the injectors 10, 11, 12, 13.
