Abstract
Hydrocarbons are dehydrogenated by reaction with bromine in the presence of a hydrogen bromide acceptor, preferably one which can be regenerated by reaction with oxygen liberating bromine for reuse. Butadiene and isoprene are obtained from n-butane, n-butene, isopentane and isopentenes. The acceptor may be supported and may contain an iron or rare earth oxide. Ammonia or amine may be added to the reactants to recover traces of unreacted bromine.
