Abstract

1,037,953. Packaging-machines. LERNER MACHINE CO. Ltd. May 20, 1965 [May 20, 1964], No. 20815/64. Heading B8C. Apparatus for evacuating and if desired gassing, and then sealing filled packages comprises an openfronted chamber 2 movable horizontally to seal against a closure 8 having a support 16 for the packages adjustable vertically relative to sealing bars (not shown), housed within the upper portion of the chamber. The members 2, 8 may be mounted on a framework 10 movable vertically relative to a fixed structure 3, 5, 7 by a jack 13, a linked chain arrangement 18, 27, 31, maintaining the platform 16 at a constant level so that its distance from the sealing bars is altered. Alternatively the members 2 and 8 do not move vertically but the platform is adjusted by driving the chains. A single piston and cylinder 38 reciprocates slide rods 34, 36 in opposite directions, the sealing bars being fixed to the rods. The machine may be arranged for continual operation, filled packages being fed in on a conveyer 50, Fig. 1 (not shown), assembled in batches and thrust by pushers 52, 54 on to the platform 16. A pusher 58 ejects a sealed batch as an unsealed batch is fed in. The heat-sealing bars may be adjustable and interchangeable.
