Abstract

Tape joint cement compositions comprise 50 to 80 weight per cent solids and contain (A) 2 to 8 weight per cent of solids of a binder which is a vinyl acetate polymer of molecular weight 10,000 to 200,000 and which is added as an aqueous emulsion with a room temperature viscosity of 750 to 3000 centipoises, an average particle size of 0.1 to 5.0 microns and a pH of 3.0 to 6.5; (B) 0.5 to 2 weight per cent of solids of an inert inorganic slip agent material with a particle size not greater than 10 microns and (C) 80 to 95 weight per cent of solids of inert fillers. The polymer may be a vinyl acetate homopolymer or copolymer with butyl maleate, dibutyl maleate, dibutyl itaconate, ethyl acrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate, diethyl fumarate, dioctyl maleate, dioctyl itaconate or vinyl stearate. The slip agent may be talc, ground clay, mica, alumina and colloidal silica. Specified fillers are powdered marble, mica and asbestos. The compositions may also contain polyvinyl alcohols containing not more than 40 weight per cent of residual polyvinyl acetate; thickeners, e.g. methyl cellulose, glycols, glycol ethers and glycol ether esters; defoamers; surface-active agents and fungicides. Examples describe compositions comprising mica, asbestos, marble, ethylene glycol, methyl cellulose and water together with (1) potassium tripolyphosphate, talc, sodium acetate, sodium orthophenylphenate, polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol; (2) potassium tripolyphosphate, talc, defoamer, sodium orthophenylphenate and polyvinyl alcohol; (3) vinyl acetate-ethyl acrylate copolymer; (4) dibutyl maleate copolymer and (5) polyvinyl acetate. The compositions may be used for embedding wallboard jointing tapes.
