Abstract

Isocyanates, particularly di- or poly-isocyanates, are prepared by admixing a primary amine at a temperature not exceeding 50 DEG C. with an amount of phosgene which is at least 1.5 moles per amino group in 1 mole of said amine, in the presence of an inert ester solvent, and completing the phosgenation by heating above 50 DEG C., preferably below 100 DEG C. Aliphatic and aromatic mono-, di-, and polyamines may be used. Suitable solvents include alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl and alkoxy substituted alkyl esters of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, lower alkyl, alkenyl and cycloalkyl esters of aromatic monocarboxylic acids, lower alkyl esters of aliphatic and aromatic di-carboxylic acids containing at least two C atoms between the two -COOH groups and alkyl esters of carbonic acid. Preferred solvents are ethyl acetate, n-butyl acetate and diethyl carbonate. Examples describe the production of 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanates and diisocyanatodiphenyl methane.
