Abstract
Peptides are produced by reacting amino acids or peptides which are protected at the carboxyl group with amino acids or peptides which are protected at the amino group in the presence of a carbodiimide of the formula <FORM:0872414/IV (b)/1> where R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group and where at least one of the four groups R is substituted by one or more tertiary and/or quaternary amino groups. The carbodiimides are converted to the corresponding ureas during the reaction and a list of suitable carbodiimides is given. Examples describe the preparation of carbobenzoxy-glycyl-sarcosyl ethyl ester in the presence of 3-dimethylaminopropyl tert. butyl carbodiimide and 2[(N-morpholyl)-ethyl] tert. butyl carbodiimide and of carbobenzoxy-glycyl-sarcosyl-L-leucine methyl ester in the presence of 3-diethylaminopentyl-4-tert. butyl carbodiimide and 3-dimethylaminopropyl-tert. butyl carbodiimide.
