Abstract

1,037,486. Making longitudinally reamed tubing; welding by pressure. KOCHS WERMELSKIRCHEN G.m.b.H., [trading as FRIEDRICH KOCHS]. June 4, 1963 [June 4, 1962 (2)], No. 22188/63. Headings B3A and B3R. A method for the continuous manufacture of welded metal tubes from metal strip comprises the steps of forming the strip into an open tube, bringing the edges of the strip together to weld same by induced heat, resistance heating the closed tube, calibrating the tube in the hot state and then cutting the tube into desired lengths. Strip 12 is formed by rollers 3 into tubing the longitudinal seam of which is induction welded by means 4 working at, for example 1-10 or 400 kc. and including an inductor 6 with or without a magnetic core. The tube is then resistance heated by means 7 which may include rollers or other contacts or inductors supplied with current. The hot tube then passes to a calibrating rolling mill 9, the rolls of which may be driven faster than the rollers 3 to stretch the tube between the means 7 and mill 9. The tube 13 is then cut off by a saw or shear 11. A motor 14 driving the rollers 3 and a motor 15 driving the rolls of the mill 9 may be controlled by means 18 measuring the thickness of the strip, and by means measuring the tractive pull on the tube and comprising detectors 16, 17 of the speeds of rotation of the motors or a device for measuring the torque of the motor 15. The mill 9 may be driven through a Ward-Leonard set. The thickness of the tube may be measured at 20. The intensity of the heating current to the device may be controlled rather than the tractive pull. Hydraulic drives may be used.
