Abstract

1340737 Making tubes; rolling FRIEDRICH KOCKS 28 May 1971 [23 June 1970] 17741/71 Headings B3M and B3A In a method of stretch reducing a tube 18 having weak points 14 where adjacent lengths are butt-welded together, the stretch reducing mill 2 is so controlled that the tension exerted on these weak points is reduced as they pass through the mill. This lessens the risk of fractures in the stretch reducing process. The tube 18 may be formed from lengths of seamless tube welded together, or (as shown) from strips 8 which are butt-welded together, are skelped by rollers 14, and seam welded by an induction welder 16. A heater 20 is followed by a detector 28 which senses the presence of weak points. An output signal from the detector is used to control an auxiliary motor 26 for the stretch reducing stands. The motor 26 modifies the driving speed applied to the stands by a main motor 24. Alternatively in the case where the stands are individually driven, the speeds of the stands can be suitably adjusted as the weak points pass them. A flying shear 22 finally severs desired lengths from the tube.
