Abstract
103,743. Burkill, C. April 25. 1916. Lawn-mowers.- A machine for trimming the edges of lawns &c., of the type in which a rotary cutter l co-operating with a fixed blade u is mounted on a vertical axis m and is driven by connexions to a single travelling wheel a which supports the machine frame b, has the fixed blade and the rotary cutter adjustably mounted. The rotary cutter, which is provided with a guard-plate w, is mounted in bearings, in an extension j, j<1> of the main frame of the machine, the lower bearing being comprised by a sliding spring-pressed block n<2>, and the upper bearing being rounded off to permit a slight angular movement of the cutter. The fixed blade u is secured to a bar k extending across the frame j, j<1>, and may be turned about a projection k<1> on this frame as pivot by screws k<2>, k<3>. A small roller t and guide-plate v hold the cutting-device at the desired distance from the edge of the lawn. In a modification, the upper bearing of the cutter may be mounted in a ball-and-socket joint. In the Provisional Specification, modifications are described in which the rotary cutter is mounted in an adjustable auxiliary frame, and in which each end of the rotary cutter is pressed. towards the end of its slot by a spring.
