Apparatus for pressing a textile sliver 24 between a table 12 and a bracket 14 comprises a lifting hook 22 adapted to be attached to the spindle 21 of a sliver package 18, the hook 22 and table 12 being connected by linkage 31, 33 so that the hook is lowered as the table is raised and vice versa. When the table is lowered to release a compressed sliver, the next sliver package 18 is raised to the position seen in Fig. 2 (not shown), so that an operator can swing it into position over the table 12.
