Abstract

A calender has between a pair of steel rolls a roll having an elastically deformable layer for the damping of vibrations. The roll comprises between a core and a thin metal shell either a rubber layer, or a number of thin walled hollow metal or rubber tubes filled with high pressure air arranged parallel to the axis of the roll. The roll is carried by levers which also support a counter-weight to increase the effective weight of the roll to decrease the vibrations of the roll.
