In a cigarette container made from soft or semi-stiff paper a transverse lid 14 is formed by an extension of the top 12, the lid having a flap 15 hinged thereto which may be inserted between or behind the double thickness 3, 4 of one side of the container. The carton, which may be lined with foil and provided with a transparent outer cover, is formed from a single blank which may be modified to allow of different positions of the flap 15, although in each case the resultant container has the same outward appearance. The container is filled from the bottom when the blanks of Fig. 7, 8 (not shown) are used, and from the top when that of Fig. 6 (not shown) is used.
