Abstract
<PICT:1036741/C1/1> A moulding machine for moulding the faceplate of a shadow-mask colour television tube and with provision for inserting metal eyelets in the faceplate during the moulding operation, the eyelets being used for the mounting of the shadow mask (see Division H1), comprises a dish section 60, a plunger section 61 and a two-part retaining ring 62, the plunger section being equipped with three compressed-air-operated pistons 68. Each piston 68 has a plunger rod 71 for first forming a recess in a boss portion 44 of the molten glass charge 21 forming the faceplate and then for feeding an eyelet 42 supplied from a magazine 75 into the recess. The eyelet is heated by gas jets 76. After the glass is allowed to cool the faceplate is annealed by raising it to a temperature of about 500 DEG C. and then slowly reducing the temperature at a rate of about 2 DEG C. per minute to a terminal temperature of 350 DEG C. The plunger section of the moulding machine has cooling fins 63 and is water-cooled. In an alternative method of providing metal eyelets in the faceplate blank metal pads, e.g. of stainless steel, are first-sealed into recesses in the faceplate after the faceplate has been moulded and annealed. Recesses are then drilled in the metal pads (see Division B3). The faceplate may be formed of glass having a thermal coefficient of expansion of 10.4 x 10-6 per DEG C., the frit of glass having a thermal coefficient of 10.5 x 10-6 per DEG C. and the steel having a thermal coefficient of 11.4 x 10-6 per DEG C. The frit is fired at a temperature of 440 DEG C.
