Abstract

Coloured vitreous silica is produced by the fusion of a purified charge of sand or quartz crystal powder in a furnace with an addition of not more than 1% by weight comprising at least one element having an Atomic Number of 22 to 29 inclusive, 59, 60, 62, 68, 74 or 92, or a suitable compound of one such element, the fusion being in air in the case of sand and in vacuo at a pressure of less than 5 mm. of mercury in the case of quartz crystal powder. Not more than 1% of alumina may also be added. A large variety of colouring is produced by varying the amounts and by mixtures, of which the following oxides are examples:-V blue; Mn orange-brown; V + Mn olive green with low concentration V; V + Mn black with high concentration V; Cr green; Co blue-grey; Ni grey; U fawn; Ti purple; Fe reddish brown to black; Co + Mn royal blue; Cu reds; Cu selenide coral red; Cu silicide garnet; Pr green; Nd lavender; Et pink; W smokey grey; Sa yellowish.
