Abstract

1,036,550. Reactors. COMMISSARIAT A. L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. July 5, 1965 [July 24, 1964], No. 28375/65. Heading G6C. A device for damping the fall of a fuel element in a reactor fuel channel comprises a closed deformable container placed in the channel. Core support plate 16 carries moderator brick columns 10 keyed by keys 12 to define the fuel channels 8. The moderator is supported by bearing 14 and the fuel elements by shoulder 22 of coolant gas guide cone 20 retained by screws 18. Above dummy fuel element 34 is the first fuel element 38 supported in a tube 42 by a spider 40 and flow splitters 44. If such a fuel element is dropped, it will tear free of its mounting tube and pass downwards into catchpot 26 until it strikes the container 46, e.g. stainless steel, containing powdered graphite 48. Deformation of the container 46 absorbs kinetic energy, as also may stretching of the catchpot 26 in the region of its slots 50. The container 46 may be replaced with an equivalent depth of shorter containers. A number of alternative catchpots are described (Figs. 2 to 7, not shown) which provide for further energy absorption; thus, Fig. 2 shows shearing washers (52) placed between abutting shoulders 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows a sleeve (54) placed between catchpot 26 and plate 16 to prevent the shearing washers joining the catchpot in the channel; Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a scoring ring form of energy absorber, and Figs. 6 and 7 show a deformable taper sleeve.
