Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A friction welding machine for welding two rods together end-to-end has a headstock having a chuck (not shown) secured to one end of a shaft 12 rotatable and longitudinally slidable in bearings 13, 14 mounted in the headstock body 10, 11. The body 10, 11 has a cylindrical chamber 15 formed therein in which is disposed a flange 21 rotatable with the shaft and enclosed by a two-part, non-rotatable, double-acting piston 16, 17 slidable in the chamber 15 to move the flange and shaft therewith in response to the pressure of oil supplied through bores 34, 35. Oil is also supplied to bores 26, 27 in the body 10, 11 and passes therefrom through peripheral grooves 28, 29 and bores 32, 33 in the piston 16, 17 to annular grooves 30, 31 formed in the surfaces of the piston which abut the rotating flange 21. The oil in the grooves 30, 31 form hydrostatic pads between the flange and the piston.
