In a friction welding machine having a rotatable first holder for holding one workpiece, a second holder for holding a second workpiece, means for urging the holders together, a first friction brake member fast with the first holder and an axially slidable non-rotatable second friction brake member, means is provided for urging the brake members together which simultaneously brakes the rotation of the first holder and urges the holders together with an axial force which is additive to that exerted by the first means. A fixed head (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), supports in bearings (2), (3) a spindle (4) carrying a chuck (10) at one end and a brake disc (17) at the other. A pair of rods (7) slide in bushes (5) in the fixed head and with end yokes (8), (9) forms a frame (6) which carries on its yoke (9) a chuck (11) facing the chuck (10). Two hydraulic cylinders and pistons are arranged between the yoke (8) and the fixed head (1) to draw the chuck (11) towards the chuck (10). Alternatively an external cylinder acting on the yoke (9) may be used. A further hydraulic cylinder (23) is fixed to the yoke (8) and its piston acts on a non-rotatable plate (18) carrying a friction lining (20) to engage the brake discs (17). In operation the workpieces are arranged in the chucks, the spindle (4) is rotated by gears or belt pulley (12) and pressure fluid is supplied to the cylinders (13) to draw the chuck (11) towards the chuck (10). When the welding temperature is reached, fluid is supplied to the cylinder (23) to force the friction lining (20) against the disc (17) to stop rotation of the chuck (10) and add further axial pressure to the chuck (11). The bearing (2) may be a pressure fed thrust bearing so arranged that it exerts a force equal and opposite to that exerted by the cylinders (13).
