Abstract
<PICT:1035007/C6-C7/1> In apparatus for electroplating a cathodically-connected body and comprising a tank including a main chamber for the electrolyte and the body and at least one overflow chamber, a carrier is provided for supporting anode plates spaced from the body and immersed in the electrolyte and an electrolyte circulating and filtering unit is arranged to receive electrolyte from the main and overflow chambers and to return it after filtering to the main chamber by jet discharge pipes disposed parallel to the anode plates so that electrolyte flows vigorously between the anode plates and part of the electrolyte washes against the body. As shown, the body to be plated is a printing cylinder b which is rotatably mounted between end plates in the main chamber a1 flanked by overflow chambers a2, a3 connected by a pipe (not shown) close to the chamber bottoms. Suspended above and reaching into the main chamber are supports d on which are arranged anode plates c extending parallel to the axis of the cylinder b. Electrolyte from the main and overflow chambers is withdrawn through drain pipes e1, e3 and passed through filtering and pumping units m,n for return to the main chamber via jet pipes o1, o2 extending parallel to the cylinder axis so that electrolyte is continually swept past the immersed part of the cylinder and the anodes. In a modification (Fig.2, not shown)in which the cylinder to be plated has slots cut in it, the cylinder is dispersed with its axis vertical in a cylindrical main chamber surrounded by a shorter overflow chamber, the anodes are arranged adjacent the main chamber wall with their lengths parallel to the cylinder axis and tangential to the cylinder, the main chamber has a central drain and the overflow chamber has two separate drains, and the jet pipes are disposed vertically in a ring between the cylinder and the anodes with their jet orifice arranged to eject the electrolyte largely tangentially to the cylinder to assist flow between the anode plates.
