Abstract

A de-aerator for boiler-feed water comprises two or more compartments through which the feed water is sprayed in countercurrent to a flow of steam, the compartments communicating with one another so that water in the base of succeeding compartments can flow into the first compartment and a pump being provided <PICT:0638198/III/1> <PICT:0638198/III/2> to withdraw water from the first compartment and discharge it as spray into the succeeding compartments. The de-aerator (Fig. 1) comprises a shell 1 divided by partitions 2 into two or more compartments 3, 4 provided with spray nozzles 5, 51. Feed water, under the control of a float valve 6, is delivered to a chamber 7 which feeds nozzles 5 and water from the well of chamber 3 is withdrawn by pump 10 and delivered to chamber 12 feeding the nozzles 51 in compartment 4. De-aerated water is withdrawn from the well 13 of chamber 4 by extraction pump 14 and discharged to boiler feed pump 15. Pump 10 is operated at a constant capacity which is higher than that of pump 14 so that more water is circulated than is withdrawn and a difference in water-level is obtained in compartments 3, 4, the water in compartment 4 flowing over a weir into compartment 3. Steam enters the de-aerator at S and is directed by partitions 2 in countercurrent to the spray of water from nozzles 5, 51. Non-condensable gas is withdrawn at 8, 16, additional spray nozzles 9, 17 being provided at these points to serve as devaporizers. Perforated spraying trays 18 are provided in each compartment. In a modification (Fig. 2), feed water is discharged to compartment 3 under the control of a float valve 19 influenced by the water-level in compartment 4. Means are also provided to short-circuit the de-aerator and draw water direct from the feed tank 20 in case of emergency. In further modifications, the de-aerated water is collected in a storage tank to obviate the use of float-gear; the compartments of the de-aereator are superimposed upon one another in a vertical cylindrical shell.
