In a respirator, a nutrient gas bottle 2 or a compartment therefor is of circular cross-section and is nested in a concavity formed in a container 1 for carbon dioxide absorption material, the overall cross-section of the container and the bottle or compartment being of rounded elongate form. The gas bottle 2 and the container are disposed in a casing 24, the container being concave along one side against which the bottle nests. The upper part of the container is connected by an extensible hose 20 to the mouthpiece 19 of a face mask which may be drawn out of the casing for use on removal of a lid 28 extending across the whole or a part of the top of the casing. A vertical tube 7 having a non-return valve 9 extends through the container, to which it is connected at its upper and lower ends by perforated portions 11, so that on inhalation, gas is drawn from the breathing bag 16 through absorption agent in the container and on exhalation gas passes to the breathing bag mainly by way of the tube and the valve. The breathing bag is connected to the gas bottle through a lung-controlled valve which is operated by a lever as the bag collapses. In use, the casing is slid downwardly on the gas bottle and container or a lower lid is hinged downwardly to provide space for the expansion of the breathing bag and, through a pull rope 27, to open the on-off valve of the bottle. In an alternative construction, inner walls of a plastic case provide compartments for the bottle, the breathing bag and the hose, the remainder of the casing forming the carbon dioxide absorption container.
