Abstract
A respiratory appliance to be carried by a miner on a wrist belt &c., comprises a canister containing an oxidizing catalyst and filtering material to treat noxious gases, the canister prior to use being provided with a removable lid which covers a mouthpiece, nose-clip, and head-harness attached to the upper part of the canister. As described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown), the canister is provided with a perforated plate 10 down through which noxious air is drawn to compartments 9, 8 containing the purifying material and thence the air is drawn up through a central tube 4 to the mouthpiece. The lid is secured on the canister by two straps each hooked at one end to the canister body and secured at the other by a removable member 21. The mouthpiece is formed with an exhalation valve 13, Fig. 2 (not shown) and an inhalation valve is provided at the bottom of the tube 4. The lid 2 is of metal or plastics material and the filtering material comprises a resin wool and alumina impregnated with calcium chloride.
