An apparatus for cleansing and / or sterilizing bottles and like containers by means of a gas under pressure comprises a pipe 12 bevelled at the end 15 which is inserted into the bottle so that gas under pressure flowing through the pipe flows in the direction of the arrows 18. The pipe, which may alternatively be a flexible tube or a hollow needle is preferably arranged eccentrically in relation to the axis of the bottle to assist in the direct discharge of the air after a single circulation, the pipe opening being directed away from the bottle axis. An additional pipe or tube 20 connected to a vacuum pump may be arranged at the opening 10 in the case of the bottle being upright. The pressure and vacuum may act continuously or with a pulsatory action.
