Abstract

A trackside automatic coupling and uncoupling apparatus such as that shown in Specification 926,439, for hook and link rail vehicle couplings, may have its hook engaging magnetic arm replaced by the arm now to be described. A lever 7, Figs. 1, 4 pivoted at 8 to a plate 1, carries an adjustable tooth 9 and is connected by a piston-rod 6 to a pressure cylinder 4 pivoted at 5. By swinging the shaft 3 downwardly or by moving the shaft axially the jaws may be inserted from the trackside into a position between two vehicles, and by then actuating the cylinder 4 the tooth 9 may be swung towards a fixed but adjustable tooth 10 so as to pivotally clamp a coupling hook 13 therebetween at a point 14, Fig. 5. The plate I is provided with a stop plate 12 which ensures that the teeth 9, 10 engage the hook at substantially the same point 14 every time. The plate 1 and the engaged hook may then be swung in a vertical plane for coupling or uncoupling by rotation of the shaft 3. Without its power cylinder 4 the jaws may be adapted for manual control through a hand lever, and both teeth may be arranged to move. The tooth 9 may however be mounted for linear movement.
