Abstract
1,033,321. Cutting apparatus. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 13, 1965 [Feb. 4, 1964], No. 4663/64. Heading B4B] Apparatus for cutting rigid polymeric sheet 1 comprises a support 2 for the sheet, having a straight boundary beyond which the sheet can project, means 7 to hold the sheet firmly on the support, with part extending beyond the boundary, cutting means 19, 21 to cut into the thickness of the sheet along the boundary and means 10 to move that part of the sheet which extends beyond the boundary about the cut line to cause opening of the cut and ultimately breakage along the line of cut. As described, the sheet, e.g. polymethylmethacrylate, is supported on the table 2 by an air cushion. The clamp 7 is moved towards or away from the table by pneumatic cylinders 6 and the member 10, which carries suction pads 11 is operated by rods 12 and pneumatic cylinders 14. In operation, the suction pads hold the sheet firmly on the table. The cutter mechanism comprises a chain 19 driven by a motor 20, Fig. 3 (not shown), around sprockets 16, 18 with steel knife blades 21 secured to the chain. The depth of cut is adjustable, from 30 to 40% of the thickness of the sheet, and the cutting edges are narrow in width and of progressively increasing height from the carrier in the direction counter to the direction of movement of the carrier. The apparatus may be made movable so that the knife and severing mechanism move forward with a sheet of material as it is being extruded.
