Abstract

Photographic silver halide emulsions are chemically ripened in the presence of simple or complex salts of gold or metals of Group VIII of the Periodic Table having an atomic weight greater than 100 which are soluble in water or in solvents miscible with water, together with compounds of the formula wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group which may be substituted, X is hydrogen, hydroxyl or halogen and n is an integer from 1 to 5, and in which the ring can be substituted ortho or para to the hydroxy. group by alkyl or alkoxy groups having up to 3 carbon atoms, halogen atoms or hydroxy groups. Reducing agents such as hydroxycarboxylic acids, e.g. hydroxyacetic acid, d-gluco- α-hexonic acid, d-gluco-α-heptonic acid, aldosugars, dimethylformamide, aliphatic aminocarboxylic acids and nitrilotriacetic acid may also be present and may be added separately or first mixed with the metal salt and hydroxybenzylamine compound. Gold salts include chlorobromo- or iodoaurites of calcium, strontium, cadmium or gallium.
