Abstract
A process for the electrophoretic coating of metal substrates with aluminium as broadly claimed in Specification 884, 797 is modified in that during the final heat treatment, or immediately thereafter before a substantial drop in temperature occurs, the stacked or coiled, coated substrate is placed in a gas tight enclosure in which the pressure is reduced to evacuate gas from between the layers of the coated substrate, e.g. to a pressure of about 2 cm. Hg, which enclosure is then filled with oxygen. The temperature of the final heat treatment may be from 250 DEG C. to 500 DEG C. The steps of evacuating the gas tight enclosures and filling it with oxygen may be repeated in turn. The electrolyte for electrophoresis may comprise a suspension of finely divided aluminium in industrial methylated spirit containing water and nickel chloride.
