[Also in Division F4] Corrosion of the metal of a sealed container housing a material that reacts with said metal to generate hydrogen is inhibited by producing hydrogen at the external surface of the container at a temperature sufficient to effect diffusion of hydrogen through the container wall. A particular application of this process is in heat-storage systems of the type comprising a closed iron vessel containing NaOH, wherein the iron is protected from corrosion by the generation at its surface of nascent hydrogen by reaction of atmospheric water vapour with the iron, which reaction may be assisted by the provision on the iron of a coating such as silica gel, alumina, or a zeolite, which absorbs water vapour.
