Abstract

103,302. Storey, N. C. Jan. 8, 1916. [Convention date]. Cultivators; ploughs.-A motor tilling-machine comprises a tractor frame A carrying the motor M to which a frame F, carrying a pair of geared rotors R on which the tilling-tools are mounted, is secured by pivots 22. Each rotor carries four tilling-tools formed with front cutting-edges f, laterally-extending cutting-faces f<x>, and mouldboards m. The outwardly bent cutting-face f<x> of each tool operates when the tool is in its extreme forward position and is being dragged laterally by the machine. The rotors are driven from a power shaft 15x through a universal joint 35, short shaft 32, and bevel and pinion gearing. The depth of operation of the tools is controlled by a wheel 40 mounted at the rear of the frame F, to which links 43 carrying trenching-ploughs 41, 42 are pivoted. The shaft 15<x> is operated from a shaft 12 adapted to be clutched to the motor shaft through gear-wheels 13, 14, a shaft 15, and a transmission gearing T, preferably providing for three speeds ahead, a neutral position, and one speed reverse. The shaft 15 is connected. also through gear-wheels 21, 20 and transmission Tx, preferably comprising provision for three speeds ahead and one speed reverse and provided with differential mechanism, to shafts 18, 18<x> operating the tractor wheels 3. Band brakes 61 engaging brake drums 60 may be operated to cause the driving-wheel 3 to move differentially, thus enabling the machine to take sharp turns. The rotor frame and the trenching-ploughs are connected by links 58 and chains 59 to segment levers 56, which are adapted to be swung to lift the tools for transport, by chains 55 connected to a shaft 52 driven through worm gear and a clutch from the shaft 15.
