3 Claims. (c1. 18053) This invention relates to a truck, particularly adapted to support a drilling machine, mining machine, or other mechanism, for operation in a coal mine.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved truck of the above mentioned type.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a truck with a primary electric driving reversible motor which drives a gear train leading to traction wheels of the truck and also drives a cable reel and in addition a hydraulic pump; there being shiftable gearing in said gear train, the arrangement being such that the hydraulic pump is driven at all times when the motor is running, and the cable reel is driven whenever the traction wheels are driven, it being possible to drive the cable reel without driving the traction wheels, and also possible to disengage the cable reel drive and the traction wheel drive simultaneously.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter, the novel features and combinations being set forth in the appended claims.

Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the truck includes a main frame It having a pair of front steering wheels II, II operable from the rear platform 12 of the main frame In by a steering wheel l3. Rear traction wheels H are provided for the truck, said wheels It being driven through conventional gearing, including a differential l5, through appropriate gearing in a gear box It which is disclosed in detail and described hereinafter.
The rear platform l2 carries a reversible electric primary driving motor II, to the rear of which is a cable reel I! having a conventional spooling device l9 therefor. The cable reel l8 and spooling device I! are driven from the motor ll through the gear box It and gearing therein, as hereinafter described.
Mounted adjacent the front of the main frame I0 there is hydraulic mining transmission illustrated as a hydraulic drill 20 which may, for example, follow the disclosure of the application of John S. Beltz, Serial No. 169,358, filed August 19, 1947, for an Improvement in a Power Driven and Controlled Coal Mine Drilling Machine.
Mounted on the housing of the gear box It there is a hydraulic pump 2| which supplies hydraulic fluid under pressure to any desired mechanism and in the particular instance to various hydraulic motors of the drill 20. It is obvious that other types of mechanisms may be supported by the main frame In of the truck. It is also evident that hydraulic pressure from the pump 2! may be utilized on the truck itself, as distinguished from the drilling mechanism there- Attention is now directed particularly to Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5 and to the construction of the gearing within the gear box I6 and its association with the reversible primary driving motor H, the traction wheels I4, the cable reel l8, and the pump 2|, since said motor I! drives the other mentioned devices. .Motor l1 is connected through a flexible coupling (see Fig. l) to a stub shaft 22 (see Fig. 5) mounted in appropriate anti-friction hearings in the gear box It and having at one end a bevel gear 23 which meshes with a ring gear 24. Ring gear 24 is rigidly attached to a sleeve or hollow hub 25 which is mounted for free rotation on a drive shaft 26, there being anti-friction bearings interposed between opposite ends of the sleeve 25 and the drive shaft 26.
At its forward end drive shaft 26 extends through a packed opening in the gear box It and is connected by a flexible coupling to the differential I5 which leads by appropriate standard gearing to the two traction wheels H. In
other words, the two wheels H are differentially driven from the motor l1 through gearing which includes the drive shaft 25. Near its forward end shaft 26 is mounted by an anti-friction bearing in a removable cap of the gear box IS. A sleeve 21 surrounds the shaft 25and is slidably mounted along the longitudinal axis thereof. Said sleeve 21 is slidably carried on the shaft 26 by a sleeve bushing 28.
At its forward end, as viewed in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the sleeve 21 has a feathered or splined connection with the sleeve 25 as provided by the cooperating splines 29. The cooperating splines 3 29 thus provide a continuous driving connection between sleeves 25 and 21, while providing for the axial shifting of said sleeve 21 relative to the shaft 26 and the sleeve 25.
Substantially adjacent the center of sleeve 21 and just to the right of the bushing 2|, said sleeve 21 is provided with clutch jaws 30 adapted to cooperate with clutch jaws 1| formed integral with the shaft 28. Thus when the sleeve is moved to the right, as viewed in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the clutch elements 20 and ii will provide a driving connection between the sleeve 21 and the shaft 26. This will, of course, effect a driving connection between the motor l1 and the traction wheels I! through the difierential I! by way of shaft 22, gears 22 and 24, sleeves 25 and 21, jaw clutch members 32 and 2|, and shaft 20.
Intermediate its ends and on the outside thereof the sleeve 21 carries a wide spur gear 32 which is in mesh with a reach gear 33 for all longitudinal or axial positions of adjustment of the sleeve 21. Reach gear 33 is supported by anti-friction hearings on an appropriate shaft 34 in the gear box IE and meshes with the driving pinion 35 on the drive shaft of the hydraulic pump 2|.
It is thus evident that there is a positive drive between the shaft 22 and the pump 2| at all times regardless of the position of the shiftable or adjustable sleeve 21; so the pump 2| is always operating whenever motor I1 is running. Well known valve means may be provided so that the output of the pump 2| is always the same, regardless of its direction of rotation, if desired.
Adjacent its left-hand end, as viewed in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, the shaft 2 extends into a rotatable but nonshiftable sleeve 18 which is mounted in an anti-friction roller bearing carried by a removable partition 21 of the gear box It. At opposite ends of the sleeve 3! there are anti-friction bearings interposed between the internal surface thereof and the adjacent portion of the shaft 26. To the right of the partition 31 the sleeve 36 has a pair of axially spaced-apart peripheral clutch jaws 38 and 38 adapted to intermesh selectively with jaws 40 carried on a removable ring which forms the left-hand part of the sleeve 21. The jaws 40 may also selectively be adjusted to a position intermediate the laws 38 and 39, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, which is a neutral position for the sleeve 21.
At its left-hand end the sleeve ll is provided with a bevel gear 4| which meshes with a ring gear 42 of a free wheeling or over-riding roller type clutch 43 which is mounted on a shaft 44, mounted near opposite ends in anti-friction bearing carried by removable caps of the gear box IS. The shaft 44 extends through one of the mentioned caps, adjacent which there is a stufling box. Said shaft 44 carries a sprocket wheel 45 which is connected by a well known form of gearing, such as a drive chain, to drive the cable reel I8 and the spooling device ll.
Referring particularly to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, it will be seen that manually operated mechanism .is providedfor shifting the sleeve 21 into'any of three positions. This mechanism includes an operating lever 48 having a releasable detent associated with a knob 41. The lever 42 is keyed to an operating shaft ll which is journaled in a topplate of the gear box i6 and is provided at its bottom with an integral crank arm 49 having a dog or projection '50 extending into an opening in the longitudinally slidable shipper 5|. The shipper 5| is mounted in appropriate guideways carried by the gear box I and has a pair of downwardly extending arms or projections 52 (see Fig. 4) which straddle the gear 32.
It is evident that by placing the arm 46 in its central position the sleeve 21 will be in the neutral position illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The sleeve 21 may be shifted either to the right or to the left from its neutral position, as desired by the operator who may manipulate the control lever 46 and latch said lever in any of its three positions.
The gearing within the gear box I6, as above described, is such that under all conditions the hydraulic pump 2| is directly connected to the motor I1, so hydraulic fluid will be produced by said pump 2| whenever the motor 11 is running. If the lever ii is shifted so as to move the sleeve 21 to the right, said sleeve 21 will be in the position illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Under these conditions, jaws 30 and 3| will be engaged,
as will jaws 39 and 0. Consequently, motor [1 will be connected to drive the traction wheels I4 and to drive the cable reel l8 as this driving operation is modified by the over-run or freewheeling clutch 43.
If the motor I1 is operated in a direction to drive the truck forward or to the right, as viewed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the ring gear 42 of the clutch 43 will be rotated in a counterclockwise direction at a speed which will allow the cable to rotate the drum It so as to feed out said cable. This is because of the fact that the ring gear 42 will rotate faster than the shaft 44, they both rotating in the same direction. Should the motor 11 be reversed so as to move the truck in a reverse direction or to the left, as viewed in Figs. 1 and 2, the cable reel would operate in a reverse direction, namely, to reel in the cable. Said clutch 43 would effect a temporary direct connection between the ring gear 42 and shaft M, the two rotating in a clockwise direction.
Under some conditions it is desirable to reel in or pay out the cable while the truck is standing still. To do this, sleeve 21 is shifted by the lever 46 so that the clutch jaws 40 on the left-hand thereof mesh with the clutch jaws 38 (see Fig. 4) of the sleeve 36. Under these conditions the jaws 20 and II are, of course, disengaged so there is no driving connection to the traction wheels II. It is then possible to operat the motor H in either direction so as to provide for manual paying out of the cable or the reeling in thereof, the action being similar to that when the truck i being driven. 7
By reference particularly to Fig. 4 of the drawings it will be evident that when the sleeve 21 is in its neutral position the clutch jaws III as well as the clutch jaws 30 are disengaged and consequently neither the shaft 26 nor the sleeve 36 are driven, the only drive under these conditions being from the motor 11 to the pump 2|.
Obviously those skilled in the art may make various changes in the details and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claims hereto appended, and applicant therefore wishes means including an electric motor, a hydraulic pump operable to supply fluid pressure for operating said mechanism, a cable reel on said frame, and adjustable gearing selectively interconnecting said electric motor with said cable reel and selectively simultaneously connecting it with said traction means or not as desired, and always interconnecting said electric motor and said puml-t,
said adjustable gearing including a sleeve, gears connecting said sleeve to be driven whenever said motor operates, a shiftable sleeve connected to be driven at all times by said first sleeve and shiftable axially into two driving positions and a neutral position, gearing interconnecting said-shiftable sleeve and said pump for all adjustable positions of said shiftable sleeve, gearing connected to said cable reel including a, pair of spaced clutch members, said shiftable sleeve having a clutch member adapted to engage selectively one or the other of said pair of clutch members when in either of its two driving positions and to engage neither of them when in its neutral position, a one way clutch in said cable reel drive gearing, gearing connected to said traction means, and traction gearing driving clutch means carried in part by said traction means gearing and in part by said shiftable sleeve and operable to provide a driving connection between said electric motor and said traction means when said shiftable sleeve is in one driving position, in which one driving position a driving connection is also provided by the first named clutch means on said shiftable sleeve and one of said pair of clutch members, said traction gearing driving clutch means being disengaged when said shiftable sleeve is in its neutral position and when it is in the other of its driving positions.

A truck including a frame, traction means for said frame, hydraulically operated mechanism on said frame, means for driving said traction means including an electric motor, a hydraulic pump operable to supply fluid pressure for operating said mechanism, a 'cable reel on said frame, and adjustable gearing selectively interconnecting said electric motor with said cable reel and selectively simultaneouslyconnecting it with said traction means or not as desired and always interconnecting said electric motor and said pump, said adjustable gearing including a sleeve, gears connecting said sleeve to be driven whenever said motor operates, a shiftable sleeve connected to be driven at all times by said first sleeve and shiftable axially into two driving positions and a neutral position, gearing interconnecting said shiftable sleeve and said pump for all adjustable positions of said shiftable sleeve, gearing connected to said cable reel including a pair of spaced clutch members, said shiftable sleeve having a clutch member adapted to engage selectively one or the other of said pair of clutch members when in either of its two driving positions and to engage neither of them when in its neutral position, gearing connected to said traction means, and means carried in part by said traction means traction gearing driving clutchi gearing and in part by said shiftable sleeve and 'operable to provide a driving connection between said electric motor and said traction means when said shiftable sleeve is in one driving position, in which 'one driving position a driving connection is also provided by the first named clutch means on said shiftable sleeve and one of said pair of clutch members, said traction gearing driving clutch means being disengaged when said shiftable sleeve is in its neutral position and when it is in the other of its driving positions.

A truck including a frame, traction means for said frame, hydraulically operated mechanism on said frame, means for driving said traction means including an electric motor, a hydraulic pump operable to supply fluid pressure for operating said mechanism, a cable reel on said frame, and adjustable gearing selectively interconnecting said electric motor with said cable reel and selectively simultaneously connecting it with said traction means or not as desired, and always interconnecting said electric motor and said pump, said adjustable gearing including a sleeve, gears connecting said sleeve to be driven whenever said motor operates, a shiftable sleeve connected to be driven at all times by said first sleeve and shiftable axially into two driving positions and a neutral position, gearing interconnecting said shiftable sleeve and said pump for all adjustable positions of said shiftable sleeve, gearing connected to said cable reel including a pair oi" spaced clutch members, said shiftable sleeve having a clutch member adapted to engage selectively one or the other of said pair of clutch members when in either of its two driving positions, gearing connected to said traction means, and
traction gearing driving clutch means carried in part by said traction means gearing and inpart by said shiftable sleeve and operable to provide a driving connection between said electric motor and said traction means when said shiftable sleeve is in one driving position, in which one driving position a driving connection is also provided by the first named clutch means on said shiftable sleeve and one 01' said pair of clutch members, said traction searing driving clutch means being disengaged when said shiftable sleeve is in its neutral position and when 'it is in the other of its driving positions.
