Abstract

1,032,862. Copy-planing. MERRITT & CO. (ENGINEERING) Ltd. Jan. 15, 1963 [Jan. 23, 1962], No. 2377/62. Heading B3L. [Also in Division F1] In a method of forming lobes on an outer rotor for a rotary fluid-pump of the n and n + 1 lobe type, an annular blank 2 (Fig. 5, not shown) is rotated on a work-table about an axis Q whilst a cutter 10 simultaneously reciprocates axially and gyrates, the gyratory motion being effected by cranks journalled at fixed points 14, 15 and coupled to a carrier 11 for the cutter at points 12, 13. The work-table and the cranks are coupled to one another by gearing to rotate in similar directions with a speed ratio of 1: n + 1. Lobes on an inner rotor 1 (Fig. 6, not shown) are formed in a similar manner, the work-table and cranks carrying a cutter 16 being connected to one another to rotate in opposite directions with a speed ratio of 1: n. The root curves of the lobes on the outer rotor and the crest curves on the inner rotor may be of elliptic profile (Fig. 1, not shown), the cutter 10 being of part-circular profile and inclined relative to the axis Q accordingly (Figs. 2, 3 and 4, not shown). The cutter 16 may be formed by a like method, and after it has been hardened it may be ground by an abrasive where fitted in place of the cutter 10.
