Abstract
1,032,541. Grinding lenses. J. C. BAND. Oct. 22, 1962 [Nov. 3, 1961], No. 39901/62. Heading B3D. [Also in Division G2] A lens, lap or mould for a lens surface is ground to a surface of revolution of the circoid type as defined by the formula: r<SP>2</SP>+z<SP>2</SP>=a<SP>2</SP>+ u<SP>2</SP> + v<SP>2</SP> - 2u [a<SP>2</SP> - (v cot I - z csc I)<SP>2</SP>]¢, where a, u, v, I are greater than zero, I less than 90 degrees, I is the angle of inclination between a line parallel to the work axis about which material is rotated while being shaped and a tool axis intersected by that line, u is the skewness or spacing between the work and tool axes measured along their common perpendicular, # is the distance along the tool axis from the centre of the tool circle to the common perpendicular, a is the radius of the tool circle, z is the distance along the work axis from the common perpendicular to a given plane through the lens material perpendicular to the work axis, and r is the radius of the circle cut out in the lens material in the given plane. As shown in Fig. 5, the lens blanks 23 are adhered to a workholder 24 which is rotatable about the work axis by a motor 12. The tool is a cup-shaped grinding-wheel 25 whose grinding rim is of effective radius a, and is rotated about the tool axis by a motor 21. The displacement v is set by one or both of hand wheels 16, 22, and read on scales 29, 30; the skewness u is set by hand wheel 27 and read on scale 28, and the inclination I is set by hand wheel 20 and read on scale 26. In a modification, r and z may be replaced by R and Z, where R=r-b sin #; Z=z-b dz cos #; tan # = - and 0 is the angle of inclinadr tion of the lens surface normal to the work axis for the actual surface at the point R, Z, and the grinding cup wheel has a grinding rim semitoric in shape the torus being generated by the rotation of a semi-circle of radius b in the plane containing the symmetry axis of the cup wheel about that axis and with the centre of the semicircle at a distance a from the axis and of radius b. The cup wheel may be in the form of a hollow aluminium cylinder surmounted by a toric sector covered with a thin layer of electrolytic copper impregnated with diamond dust.
