Abstract

1,032,330. Tobacco smoke filters. PHILIP MORRIS Inc. Aug. 14, 1964 [Oct. 1, 1963], No. 33307/64. Heading A2C. A tobacco smoke filter contains an additive ion exchange resin, the additive being released on contact with the tobacco smoke. The additive may be nicotine or it may be a flavourant. A nicotine-cation exchange resin may be prepared by contacting a cation exchange resin with nicotine. A column is packed with the ion exchange resin in particulate form and an aqueous solution of nicotine passed therethrough. Suitable cation exchange resins include sulphonic acid types formed by cross-linking polystyrene with divinylbenzine and sulphonating the cross-linked product, phosphoric acid types formed by cross-linking polystyrene with divinylbenzene and reacting the cross-linked product with phosphoric acid to incorporate a phosphoric acid difunctional group on the styrene-divinylbenzine lattice, carboxylic acid types formed by copolymerizing methacrylic acid with a cross-linking agent such as divinylbenzene, and resins having an -OH group as the ion functional group and formed by reacting polyhydric phenols with formaldehyde. Carbonaceous cation exchange resins of the sulphonated coaltype may also be employed. Suitable flavourants for use when a flavourant-ion exchange resin is to be prepared include flavourful alkaloids, amines, myosmine, or quinine derivatives. The flavourant-ion exchange resin may be anion or cation exchange resin. Suitable cation exchange resins are the same as those suitable for the preparation of a nicotine-cation exchange resin. Suitable anion exchange resin include polystyrene quaternary ammonium resins, and the primary, secondary and tertiary amines. The filter base may be e.g. cellulose acetate and may include additives such as carbon or aluminium. The additive ion exchange resin may include additives such as carbon or aluminium and may be placed between two filter base components, may be dissolved and sprayed on to a base component or may be ground to dust and added to cellulose acetate after which the cellulose acetate is made into a filter component. Quantitative examples are given.
