Abstract

The invention comprises thiophosphonic compounds of the general formula:- <FORM:1032255/C2/1> wherein X is an S atom, Y is a propoxy or isopropoxy group, and R is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C4 alkyl radical. They may be obtained by reacting a compound of the general formula Cl.CH2.P(X)(Y)Hal wherein Hal is a halogen atom with a compound of the general formula: <FORM:1032255/C2/2> in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor, e.g. triethylamine or pyridine, while maintaining the reaction temperature at between 0 and 100 DEG C. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an organic solvent such as benzene, dioxane, toluene or xylene. The products have pesticidal properties (see Division A5).ALSO:Pests are controlled by contacting them with at least one thiophosphonate compound of the general formula: <FORM:1032255/A5-A6/1> wherein X is a sulphur atom, Y is a propoxy or isopropoxy group and R is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C4 alkyl radical (see Division C2). The thiophosphonate compound may be used in the form of a dispersion prepared by dissolving the compound in acetone and then diluting with water containing a sulphonate-type wetting agent and a methyl cellulose as emulsifier. The thiophosphonate compound may also be used in the form of an aqueous or non-aqueous solution, wettable powder, vapour or dust or in its undiluted form.
