Abstract

High impact styrene polymers free from discoloration are made by forming a mixture consisting of 2 to 30% or rubber dissolved in styrene or a mixture thereof with acrylonitrile and/or alpha-methyl styrene, removing water and acid residues from the mixture, and then bulk polymerizing it. The water and acid residues may be removed by heating the rubber-monomer mixture in a vacuum, or by adding benzene to the mixture and removing a benzene-water azeotrope by distillation. Rubbers specified are natural rubber, gutta percha, linear polybutadiene and polyisoprene, non-linear polybutadiene and copolymers of butadiene with styrene and acrylonitrile, and copolymers of isobutylene. Also present in the polymerizable mixture may be 3 to 30% of an alkyl benzene and a peroxide polymerization catalyst.
