In a process for cooling and washing a hot gas containing solid particles a washing liquid is circulated between an upper vessel 1 and a lower vessel 2 via a downcarrier 4 and a riser 3 by introducing bubbles of the gas into liquid in the riser through a pipe 14 arranged axially in the riser and communicating with the free space above the liquid in the vessel 2 through a pipe 15, the gas entering the vessel 2 through an inlet 17 and leaving the vessel 1 through an outlet 9 and liquid returning from vessel 1 to vessel 2 via the downcarrier 4 is cooled externally as at 20. Liquid from vessel 1 may be introduced into the gas passing through the inlet 17 by a pipe 24 as shown. In a modification a part of the riser 4 may be formed as a series of parallel tubes.
