Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A method of making a bent tube of helically wound reinforced plastic consists in winding at least one layer of a filament impregnated with curable plastic material upon a straight, non- porous shell of deformable material, causing the shell to become non-rigid, bending the shell whilst maintaining sufficient internal fluid pressure to sustain its circular cross-section and curing the plastic after the shell has been fully bent whilst still maintaining the internal pressure. The shell may be of a rubber or of a thermoplastic material such as polyvinylchloride; the curable plastic a hot- or coldcuring epoxy resin through which the filament is passed immediately before winding. The filament comprises multi-strand glass rovings and is wound in three layers, the first two at 45 degrees and the last at 60 degrees to the axis of the polyvinyl-chloride tube. After winding, each end of the tube is fitted with a plug 3 clamped at 5 and a hot liquid at 90‹ C. and 40 1b. sq./inch pressure is passed through the bores 4. The plugs 3 support turning arms 6, 7 of the bending apparatus which is kept in position until final curing is complete.
