[Also in Division B8] A device for sealing a flanged lid 12 to the flanged mouth of a filled container 20 with an elastic sealing and opening ring 3 trapped by the lid flange, comprises a supporting member for the ring with the container mouth flange resting on it and a reciprocating pressure plate 9 for forcing the lid on to the container and ring, a concave conical surface on a fixed die pressing the lid flange inwards towards the container to secure it and trap the ring. The container body may be of plastics and the lid of thin metal. In one embodiment, the supporting member 2 is held by a spring 4 above the rim of the die 1 until pressed down by the plate 9, a cylindrical portion 15 of which engages closely within the lid flange 23. A surface 18 bends in the flange 23. An ejector plate 8 is provided. The support 2 is recessed at 25 to receive the pull tab 24 of the ring. In a simpler version, the upper end surface of the die has a V-shaped peripheral groove, the inner boundary part of which forms the support for the ring, the lid flange passing externally of the ring and boundary part into the groove to bend against its outer wall (Fig. 2, not shown).
